Events

FANN provides a series of community and educational events for the public.  This includes small in-person nutrition education learning sessions, online webinars, live trainings, conferences, and other events designed to provide awareness and education related to community food and nutrition topics for better health.




FANN Speaker Series

A one-hour virtual segment where professionals and experts from Texas and around the country, share their knowledge with FANN network professionals on various food and nutrition topics.  Educational topics may include food is medicine programs, healthy and affordable food access, community nutrition/healthy eating education, federal nutrition assistance programs, research topics, state/federal agency guidance, and more.

This series is free for community professionals.

Harvesting for Health-Informational Session

This informational session will provide a general overview of Harvesting for Health, who it serves, including ways that your community organization can participate.  Harvesting for Health, is a statewide initiative designed to celebrate fresh foods, healthy eating, gardening, and community wellness through engaging harvest-themed experiences across Texas. Harvesting for Health encourages Texans to explore where food comes from, connect with healthier food choices, and build lasting wellness habits through interactive nutrition education and community engagement opportunities. SNAP-Ed is inviting organizations across Texas to participate by hosting engaging harvest-themed wellness experiences within their communities.

Our presenter is program specialist with the SNAP-Ed Program, Office of Community Access- Access and Eligibility Services (AES)

Summer Meals-Informational Session

This informational session will provide a general overview of the Summer Meals program, who it serves, what's new for 2026, including ways that your community organization can create awareness or participate as a feeding site.  The session will also share information on when Summer Meals resource materials will be available. 

Our presenter is program specialist with the Food and Nutrition Division at the Texas Department of Agriculture.


Nutrition Education Learning Sessions

In-person interactive, nutrition learning sessions hosted at community sites in Houston and surrounding counties.  Lessons are small classes of up to 20 participants on various Smart Shopper Program and SNAP-Ed initiatives, promoting food literacy, smarter choices, and building lasting skills that support healthy eating for better health.  Lessons are provided in low-income and underserved communities during certain times of the year.  Instructor-led learning sessions occur at host sites and include a PowerPoint presentation, handouts and other materials.

Join FANN for a free interactive and engaging learning session called Harvest for Health.  Harvest for Health introduces gardening as a practical way to support better nutrition. The initiative helps families build confidence growing fresh fruits and vegetables through simple, accessible container gardening activities.

This session connects gardening to nutrition education and healthier eating habits. By learning how to grow and use produce at home, families can explore new foods, stretch food budgets, and build lasting skills that support healthier meals. Participants will also receive healthy recipe ideas and resources to help them incorporate fresh produce into everyday cooking. 

SNAP-Ed initiatives center around educating Texans about simple ways to incorporate physical activity, hydration and nutrition into their diets for better health.

The event is part of the Texas Health and Human Services Good Food Good Move-Healthy Texan Week celebrations occurring across Texas. The event will include vendor agencies, provide community resources, nutrition education, music and fun activities. Take away healthy recipe ideas, learn a few healthy tips, and participate in a few fun learning activities.

The FANN Nutrition Networking Symposium brings together leaders and stakeholders in food, nutrition, and health to create awareness and strengthen nutrition initiatives, programs, and services to improve community health in Texas. The Symposium is the first community nutrition-food is medicine-focused event in Texas. The Symposium showcases community nutrition and food as medicine initiatives and programs with learning sessions, networking opportunities, and vendors. The Nutrition Networking Symposium aims to serve as a platform for organizations to collaborate and build upon nutrition initiatives by exchanging best practices and devising strategies to enhance health in Texas.

Texas SNAP/Medicaid Policy Changes-Informational Session

This informational session will provide an overview of SNAP and Medicaid changes affecting Texans. This includes time-limited SNAP Benefits, SNAP, and Medicaid immigration changes to eligibility due to HR1, and Medicaid changes that take effect starting in October 2026. Our presenter is a Senior Advisor with the Office of the Deputy Executive Commissioner for Access and Eligibility Services at the Texas Health and Human Services Commission.


Educator Masterclass Webinars

Live webinars for food and nutrition professionals on a variety of topics related to food is medicine, healthy and affordable food access, and community nutrition education. Attendees are also able to ask questions and receive feedback during these sessions.

The Cost of Diet-Related Disease Among Low-Income Households and the Importance of Nutrition Education   (reoccurring topic)

Diet-related diseases cost Americans billions of dollars each year and inequitable access to healthy food is a significant contributor to health disparities and poor health, especially among working families and those living in low-income households. This training will review the most common, costly, and preventable chronic health conditions and discuss why community providers play a key role in improving community health.
